The Separation Brought from Deafness in A Loss for Words...

In the book, â€Å"A Loss for Words† by Lou Ann Walker, the reader gets a glimpse into the life of a family that is somewhat separated by deafness and hearing. The author Lou Ann Walker, does an excellent job at showing the reader all that she has to go through as she grows up. The reader can see all that is going on as she describes everything that is happening in depth to them. This gives the reader a chance to see how many children that are born to deaf parents are used to be interpreters for them and also how the hearing world that they live in sees the deaf community around them. The author, Lou Ann Walker, is the daughter of deaf parents that both went deaf when they were children. Her mother because she had spinal meningitis when she was thirteen and a half months old. (Walker, 1986, pg.25) And her father was born deaf, even though he â€Å"insisted† that he was not. Deafness in this time was considered to be wrong and that something was wrong with the family fro m eating to many green chestnuts that where cursed by a gypsy (36). The author uses many ways to show her compassion that she has for her parents. All throughout the book, she shows it by the way that she tells her parents all that they need to know an not the names that people call them in public. There were many times throughout the book such as with the teacher that she want to know about the DEAF-AND-MUTE ALPHABET (82). American Families Caught in the Cycle of Poverty Essay

The rise in poverty is related to the Great Recession of 2007 which continues to the present day. The recession has lead to a decrease in jobs because many companies are trying to save money so they do not have to close their doors. While many economist at the National Bureau of Economic Research has stated that the recession has ended it still has not shown an increase in jobs. Robert Reich of the Business Insider estimates it will be another 5-8 years before the job market increases to the point it was before the recession, not including the jobs that were lost during the recession. ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬Ã‚ ¬ This means it will be at least another 5-8 years before poverty levels start to decrease to a sustainable amount. Poverty will always be around,†¦show more content†¦President Obama expects that the amount of people on government assistance programs will only increase over the next years. Obama has added nearly 260 billion dollars to the government welfare plans and is planning for this to never decrease. When you increase the amount of government assistance programs then you will also be increasing the amount of taxes we pay as Americans and the national debt. Raising how much we will be spending on the programs can put us further in debt and make it harder for us to remove our selves of the effects of the recession. As we are today nearly 40% of the people eligible for TANF (Temporary assistance for needy families) will not receive it (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities). The families that that do not have children and don’t qualify for unemployment benefits will not receive any type of cash assistance (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities). Most people do not even qualify for enough food stamps for a year worth of food. People are usually only award a 3 months supply out of every three year period (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities). While the population is growing and government programs are cracking down it will make it harder to get out of the poverty. When families rely on government assistance it becomes cycle. If a family relies on it for 2 or more years it makes it hard for the children to be able to escape the poverty. Whats the point in home schooling? I dont have the time to educate my kid. And if they arent going to a classroom regularly, theyll just sit at home and theyll never socialize. Besides, home schoolers never learn anything. I have heard many people say these things. They dont see why anyone would choose to home school their children. The fact is, home schooling is a great way to learn and grow. When kids are stuck in classrooms, week in and week out, they are told what to learn and when to learn it. But people dont all think or learn the same way. They grow at different times, in different ways. Home schooling gives you the chance to learn when youre ready to. I know several people who didnt start reading till they were 10 or older. Their parents tried to get them to read for years but they always had lots of trouble or just werent interested. They advanced beyond what was expected of them in these areas and eventually they got motivated or something clicked, and their reading took off. Soon they were enjoying the same chapter books as other kids their age. Someone asked me once, But we try to teach our kids as fast as we can and wouldnt they fall behind if they wanted to go to a university? This comes from the same narrow mind set that our society has planted in everyones heads: that we have to teach our children as fast as possible and that they must know specific things by certain deadlines. In home school, we dont force ideas, dates and numbers into childrens minds when theyre not ready. Thats like giving a kid something to chew before theyve grown teeth. And if you think about it this way, theres no falling behind. Home schooling can also be healthier. In mainstream schools, although PE is required, kids dont even have the option of healthy exercise everyday. Instead theyre cooped up in classrooms for hours. You may ask, well what about lunch and recess? Cant they run around then? Well if they werent eating for most of that time maybe they could. But schools also make lots of rules for those times that eliminate most physical activities. I went to a traditional classroom for 5th grade. Our lunch break was spent inside watching movies, then we were sent outside to play. At this school we had a small field and play structure and guess what we were told? No running. That play structure didnt even have swings. So what was there to do? Sit in the grass and make daisy chains. Not exactly exercise. Lets go back to the objections I stated earlier. I dont have time to educate my kid. But not all of home schooling takes place at home. Their are lots of classes, tutors and teachers that are willing and able to help give kids the education they want and require. I have home schooled most of my life, and my parents, though they definitely contributed greatly, werent the only ones teaching me. Ive taken classes all over San Lorenzo Valley, I had a tutor for awhile and I even learned stuff from friends. Now Im technically in my second year of high school and taking classes at Cabrillo. I also have a lot of home school friends who are going to Cabrillo too. Home schoolers never learn anything. This is an assumption that is absolutely wrong. As I stated earlier, it may look like that kid will never read, but given the time and space, they catch up. One of the main points to home schooling, is that youre always learning. Home schoolers learn day and night, Winter, Fall, Spring, and Summer. We just go about it in different ways and have different goals. In my home school Ive taken classes like doll clothes making and helping at a small farm. At first glance these may look like pointless classes to some people, but if you look more closely you realize we have to use math to adapt the pattern to make a shirt just right. Or at the farm, kids learn about how plants grow and bees make honey. We also have several science classes where kids work on their english skills because part of the class is writing a report. Because of this creative, loose way of learning, home schoolers are generally more willing and eager to learn. There are several col leges that are looking for home school students because they have more independent study habits, higher critical thinking skills and higher intellectual curiosity too. If they dont go to school everyday, theyll just sit around the house and never socialize. If you dont offer them classes and activities, this is possible. Of course some people are less social than others and, given the chance, would rather sit at home and read a book or work on a project, than go to a party. My sister is like that. Im the opposite. I spend as much time as I can with my friends and out of the house. She prefers to knit or read. But that doesnt mean she never socializes. Thats just how each of us is. Some people will take their social life into their own hands, others may need a little help getting started. Its true that raising your child might take a little work. You cant just drop them at school all day and then ignore them while they pretend to do their homework. But isnt it worth the effort if they get a healthier and fuller education?
